HALLANDALE BEACH - This week, our City kicked off our budget town hall meetings for the 2016-2017 year. City Manager Daniel Rosemond and our staff have been working on the budget since January, in preparation of delivering the budget to the commission for summer review. Our budget process is ongoing. After the budget is approved in late summer, our fiscal year starts in October. After two months, we are all right back to planning for the future.
Adopting our City’s budget is one of the most important jobs we have as fiscal stewards of your tax dollars. At our budget workshops and hearings, residents were not coming out to engage in the process. When I became Mayor, I requested that the previous City Manager, Mike Good would work with me and the commission to “Take City Hall to Our Citizens” to promote more involvement in the process. We set up four quadrant meetings and one citywide meeting.
Over the past years, these meetings still had limited attendance. Last year, we paired down the schedule to three meetings; NE and SE, NW and SW, and put it on an interactive online web/TV Virtual Budget Forum. This format seemed to work well. Residents have the chance to participate electronically and/or by phone rather than having to travel to a meeting.
The first meeting was held on Tuesday at the Hemispheres, the second meeting is tonight (May 12th at 6PM Thursday) at Foster Park. The Virtual meeting will take place, May 17th next Tuesday at 6 PM. Residents can call in, tweet or e-mail their questions to the City Manager. City Manager Rosemond will be able to answers all of your questions in real time. Please become involved with our budget. We really want to hear from you, our constituents. To participate this evening, log on to: www.cohb.org/Townhallmeeting. As always, you can contact me anytime.
